A spokesperson for the Libyan National Army (LNA) has explained that security on the south-western border with Algeria and Niger in the Salvador Triangle area has been further strengthened. The aim is to secure the border and prevent all forms of smuggling. Desert patrols in platoons and companies continue to comb a wide area along the border to Algeria and in the rear area of the border in Libya, from the city of Ghat to the border area of Essin (west of Ghat), the Takharkhouri Gate (south of Ghat) and from there north through the mountains up to Al ‘Uwaynat.
On 22 August, Force 77 of the 128th (LNA) Brigade stopped a large shipment of weapons (including 30 heavy machine guns and 15 RPGs) bound for Chad in the Kalinga Mountains area. Several Chadis were arrested.
On 24 August, the LNA’s Tariq Bin Ziyad Brigade freed more than 1,000 migrants from the hands of a human trafficker gang near al-Shuwayrif. Most of the migrants are from Africa. According to the TBZ, were taken to a ’safe area’ where they received the necessary care, including accommodation and medical care. A large number of members of the gang were arrested. Several weapons, vehicles and also a ‘significant’ amount of drugs were seized. The LNA considers the success a result of the recent troop reinforcements in the Fezzan, saying the operations had led to tangible results, as the southwestern regions of Libya had experienced a remarkable stabilization of the security situation since they began.
