On 14 December, UN Envoy Abdoulaye Bathily met with Western (Mountain) Military Region Commander Osama Juwaili, members of his staff and commanders of units of the Western (Mountain) Military Region in al-Aziziya (a town around 30km south of Tripoli) at the camp of the 4th Brigade. During the meeting, the current political and security situation was discussed in detail. Juwaili assured Bathily that he would make a positive contribution to the unification of the armed forces, to border security and the DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration) process of the militias. Juwaili also affirmed that he would provide military security for the elections in his area of responsibility.
On 10 December, Presidential Council head Muhammed al-Menfi received Juwaili and Government of National Unity (GNU) Army Chief of Staff Muhammed al-Haddad in his office in Tripoli. Juwaili briefed Menfi on the military situation in his area of responsibility, including the current events surrounding the Ghadames border crossing.
