Last week, images surfaced on social media purportedly showing dead Wagner operatives in Popasna, eastern Ukraine. According to Ukrainian sources, they were carrying Libyan bank notes and a telephone number for the head of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Khalifa Haftar (written in Cyrillic). Ukraine’s Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council, Oleksiy Danilov, described the killed men in Popasna as a ‘detachment of Libyans and Syrians’, but later acknowledged that ‘it is difficult to say what kind of soldiers they are’.
