On 17 July, the Government of National Unity (GNU) hosted the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum (TMMF) in Tripoli with the aim of discussing comprehensive solutions to the problem of irregular migration. 16 African, Mediterranean, and European states and 12 international and regional organisations participated. Several heads ofstate attended the forum, notably Chadian President Mohamed Idriss Déby, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Tunisian Prime Minister Ahmed al-Hachani and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela.
In his opening speech, GNU PM Abdul Hameed Dabaiba said that the aim of the forum is to formulate a unified vision that enhances organized cooperation and integrated coordination between the concerned countries. Dabaiba called for directing the funds spent to manage illegal immigration flows to finance development projects in the source countries, stressing the difficult living conditions in many African countries which led citizens to ‘search for a living on a difficult, bumpy and dangerous road, sometimes ending in death, in the hope of reaching Europe.’
