On 5 August, during a visit of senior officials at the border near Al´Assah, the Government of National Unity (GNU) Ministry of Interior´s Border Guard Agency announced that the first phase of its Western Border Security Project has been started under the Agency’s 2026–2027 strategic vision. This vision focuses on implementing a modern electronic border monitoring infrastructure and improving the operational readiness of the border security forces.
The project and the whole strategic vision is implemented in cooperation with European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) in Libya. The Mission supports Libyan authorities in upgrading border infrastructure along the western border with Tunisia, notably at the Ras Ajdir border crossing point, at the Al´Assah operations room, watchtowers, reinforced security infrastructure, photovoltaic power, CCTV (closed-circuit television camera) systems, and IT connectivity.
The project includes Command & Control facilities with situation centres to monitor remote-controlled sensors, including high-resolution daylight and thermal imaging cameras (partially mounted on towers) providing an early detection and identification capability. The System allows for a 24 hours/7 days a week monitoring of the border.
On 7 August, the GNU’s Customs Authority reported that a border‑monitoring unit operating near the Tunisian frontier seized a quantity of suspected narcotics in the Al´Assah area as part of ongoing joint efforts to combat drug smuggling. The operation, conducted with the Ministry of Interior´s Border Guard Agency, resulted in the confiscation of 4,872 Lyrica tablets, 300 Ecstasy pills, and eight pieces of suspected hashish, all of which were transferred to the Drug Prosecution for further investigation and legal action. Authorities said the seizure reflects continued coordination between customs and security agencies to strengthen control along the Libya–Tunisia land border, curb trafficking networks, and protect public safety.
