On the evening of 3 August, clashes broke out in Zawiyya between an armed group affiliated with Muhammed Bahroun aka al-Far and another armed group affiliated with the 103 Brigade, also known as al-Silaa, led by Othman al-Lahab. Gunfire could be heard across the city and heavy and medium weapons were used. Clashes extended from the Harsha Gate to the Refinery Bridge.
Clashes continued on the morning of 4 August. The coastal road was closed extending from Bir al-Ghanam Bridge to the traffic light in the Sabriya area is unsafe due to armed clashes. The local branch of the Red Crescent Society called on citizens to stay in their homes and stay away from dangerous areas. The Al-Zawia Oil Refining Company issued urgent security instructions to its staff who cannot access the refinery via safe routes not to come to the workplace.
Reports indicate that Muhand al-Suwaisi, a loyalist of al-Far, was injured and taken to the hospital. There are reports of several deaths and casualties among the militias, and at least three civilians are reported dead. There has been no official confirmation of the death toll so far, nor has the Government of National Unity (GNU) commented on the violence.
As of the evening on 4 August, the fighting in Zawiyya had halted following conflict resolution efforts and the intervention of the 52nd Infantry Brigade forces led by Mahmoud Bin Rajab. The coastal road had reopened.
The mayor of Zawiyya West, Mahmoud al-Deeb, condemned the acts of war and violence that occurred in the city, causing loss of life and property damage. He called on all relevant authorities to fulfill their duties, urging the Attorney General to open an investigation into the events and the government to intervene swiftly to support and provide relief to those affected.
