On 31 December, the Libyan National Army (LNA) announced that it had taken control of Camp Tendi in Awbari the evening before, due to the failure of the forces based there to participate in the security arrangement in the city. Camp Tendi belonged to the militia of Ali Kanna, who is close to the Presidential Council (PC). The camp was seized by the LNA 101st Infantry Battalion in a surprise raid and occupied without any clashes.
On 1 January, House of Representatives (HoR) Speaker Aqeela Saleh denied that he had warned of ‘the outbreak of war’ over the incident in a letter to the UNSC, the African Union, and the Arab League, claiming the letter attributed to him is forged and incorrect.
On 2 January, the head of the National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL), Ahmed Hamza, warned about the potential for a new war in Libya if the current ‘exceptional circumstances and on going divisions’ continue.
On 2 January, GNU Deputy MoD Abdussalam Zoubi informed PM Dabaiba and the members of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) in a letter that the HQ of the Sebha Military Region in Awbari was subject to storming, vandalism, and looting on 30 December by ‘forces affiliated with the Eastern Re gion’. The forces raided the homes and properties of the area’s commander and his brothers and looted them. Zoubi emphasized that what happened is a violation of the ceasefire agreement. He warned of the seriousness of the situation in southern Libya, but said the MoD would take a number of measures to limit the escalation of events.
On 4 January, the Supreme Council of Tuareg in Libya issued a statement condemning the storming of the headquarters of the Sebha Military Region and the 4th Border Guards District in Awbari. It con demned the raid on the homes of the commander of the military zone and his relatives and called on the 5+5 JMC to intervene to address the ceasefire violation that took place.
On 5 January, the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, Muhammed al-Haddad, met with the Chiefs of Staff of the Specialized Staff, the Chief of Operations, members of the 5+5 JMC, and several depart ment directors. Haddad stated that the meeting reviewed and discussed a number of topics related to the work of the JMC.
