On 14 May, UNSMIL said that it facilitated a meeting of the Border Security Joint Technical Coordination Team in Sirte, bringing together senior military and police officers from the Libyan National Army, the Government of National Unite Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Interior, in the presence of the Commanders of the Border Guard components of both sides. They agreed on practical steps to strengthen joint border security cooperation, including exchanging border guard units to conduct joint integrated operations in specific border areas, as well as further operationalizing joint border security centres that it previously established in Benghazi and Tripoli.
On 17 May, US Advisor Massad Boulos said he was ‘Very pleased to see that representatives from Libya’s east and west have once again come together to take practical steps that contribute to unity and stability.’ He said that ‘the United States strongly supports Libya’s continuing progress towards unity, which follows April’s joint participation in the Flintlock 26 military exercise and the signing of a unified national budget.’
