In Benghazi, the Libyan National Army (LNA) captured the symbolic Guwarsha checkpoint from Islamist militants on 28 July. The Islamists retaliated fiercely, including a suicide car bomb attack on 29 July that killed two LNA soldiers wounded another four. The attack was claimed by ISIS and Benghazi Revolutionary Shura Council media outlets, including the Islamist hardliner television channel Al Nabaa in Tripoli. On 30 July, ISIS conducted another suicide attack on an LNA poisition near the Guwarsha Chinese flats, injuring three soldiers.
Meanwhile, the LNA has reconsolidated its control in southwest Benghazi, after successfully repelling an attack by the Benghazi Defense Brigade (BDB). The BDB had attempted to enter Benghazi to reinforce jihadists holding out in the city.
