Tensions in Yefren (an Amazigh town) have persisted after protestors forced Central and Western Region Military District forces (under Zintani control) out of the town in late October, resulting in arrests and kidnapping of Yefren citizens in retaliation. The moves are part of a restructure by the Government of National Unity (GNU) Ministry of Interior (MoI) to expand its control over the region.
On 7 November, Presidential Council (PC) Deputy Musa al-Koni met with several notables & elders from the Nafousa Moun tains to discuss solving the problems in the region ‘before they escalate in order to preserve the social fabric of the region.’ According to the PC, the notables & elders affirmed that stability requires the assignment of military and security authorities by the PC (as Supreme Commander) and the GNU MoI, and that the issue of armed groups operating outside of state formations must be resolved. Koni said he would work to mediate a solution to ensure peaceful co-existence.
On 8 November, US Special Envoy Richard Norland spoke with Wahida Hashan, a member of the Libyan Amazigh Supreme Council from Yefren, about the recent tensions in Yefren, saying the US ‘commends any efforts at ne gotiation and are confident the situation can be resolved swiftly and peacefully.’
