Concerns about the security of Libya’s southern borders persist as the Libyan National Army (LNA) appears to reinforce the al-Tum border crossing with LNA-Chadian joint force.
On 26 September, purported leaked images of Chadian soldiers stationed at Libya’s al-Tum border crossing with Niger circulated on social media. The images included personnel with tags from the Chadian Direction Générale des Services de Sécurité des Institutions de l’État (DGSSIE) and the Division des Groupements Spéciaux Antiterrorisme (DGSAT-PSI).
On the same day, Nigerien Prime Minister Lamine Zeine joined the United Nations (UN) General Assembly meeting during its 81st session, and warned of mounting security threats along its borders with Libya and Chad.
Zeine accused France and Ukraine of supporting armed opposition groups operating adjacent to his country’s borders with Libya and Chad, with the ultimate aim of destabilising security and undermining under-construction energy pipelines in his country. Zeine also accused two other regional states of being complicit in these efforts to destabilise the country.
