Protests in Sabratha over worsening power cuts & living conditions

Aug 8, 2026 | Libyan actors

On 8 August, protesters blocked the coastal road in the Dahman area at the eastern entrance to Sabratha, demonstrating against the increased hours of power outages and what they described as the deterioration of public services. The action led to the closure of the administrative border between Sabratha and Surman and sparked renewed tensions between the two neighbouring cities. Residents of Sabratha threatened to escalate their actions, including civil disobedience and closing the city’s entrances and exits, if the authorities do not respond to their demands.
