On 13 July, an unidentified armed group attacked a Kufra Security Directorate convoy outside Kufra and forcefully freed prisoners being transferred to Benghazi, including an offender accused of murder in the shooting on 18 April of two Tebu policemen at Kufra airport, one of whom died of injuries a month later.
On 17 July, in response to the prisoner escape, the Tebu Council of Elders and Dignitaries in Kufra announced the suspension of the community’s cooperation with local security apparatuses, claiming the Kufra Security Directorate’s complicity in the facilitation of prisoner’s escape.
On 1 August, the acting head of the Kufra Security Directorate and head of the Kufra Department of Counter-Illegal Migration (DCIM), Mohamed al-Fadil al-Zwai, was shot twice in the leg.
The Kufra Security Directorate did not comment on the series of security incidents.
