On 22 July, the Benghazi-based Directorate of Anti-Illegal Immigration launched a broad operation to curb migration along Libya’s southern borders. The operations cover desert checkpoints and remote desert terrain used by human-traffickers. The department said that the operation comes as part of an inclusive security plan and in coordination with army and other security apparatuses to reinforce border security, clampdown on human smuggling networks and strengthen state sovereignty over the country’s southern borders.
On 23 July, the head of the eastern Directorate of Anti-Illegal Immigration force, General Salah al-Khufaifi, received the Chadian consulate Hasan Ahmed Da Yassri to discuss and facilitate the deportation of illegal Chadian migrants. The same day, the directorate met with International Organization for Migration (IOM) representatives in Libya to discuss the development of border security and opportunities for technical and capacity-building to curb down migration and organized crime.
