On 26 September, Politico reported that three Italian officials – Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Cabinet Secretary Alfredo Mantovano – are accused by prosecutors of helping a criminal escape justice from the ICC, and of abuse of office. This is in relation to Italy allowing Judicial Police commander Osama Najeem (aka al-Masri) – who is wanted on war crimes and crimes against humanity charges for abuse committed while overseeing Mitiga prison – to return to Libya after his arrest on an Interpol warrant on 19 January 2025. He is accused of 22 rapes and 36 murders. The Italian legislature is currently investigating their role in this incident and the parliament will take a final vote on 9 October as to whether parliamentary immunity from prosecution should be lifted.
