On 21 August, the Hellenic Navy completed the first round of a training for (eastern) Libyan coast guard officers, which was held at the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (NMIOTC), a Greek training facility at Souda Bay, Crete. The Commander of the Hellenic Coast Guard Vice Admiral Tryfon Kontizas presented diplomas to 25 Libyan officers. The training started in the last week of July and focused on coastal monitoring for migration control and maritime security, covering areas such as patrolling, search & rescue, boarding of vessels at sea, and ship inspections. A second training session is planned for September in Athens or Thessaloniki and will cover vessel maintenance, as requested by the Libyan National Army (LNA). Greek training support for the LNA Navy/Coast Guard was agreed on 6 July during the meeting between Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and LNA Commander Khalifa Haftar in al-Rajma.
