On 6 August, the Misrata Counter-Terrorism force arrested two suspected Islamic State (ISIS) operatives, Ismail Omran and Hatem Ismal Thuraya, in Sirte. Omran was arrested at a mosque close to his home, while Thuraya was arrested in his family home in the Suwa area. They have been transferred to Misrata for interrogation.
The families of the two individuals are known to have been sympathetic to ISIS since the group took over Sirte in 2016 and have allegedly been “paying off” security forces for some time to turn a blind eye to their previous affiliation with ISIS.
