On 17 May, the Speaker of the Tubruq-based House of Representatives (HoR), Aqeela Saleh, had a phone conversation with the German Ambassador to Libya, Oliver Owcza, where the two discussed current political developments in the country. According to the German Ambassador’s Twitter, the discussion was “constructive.” Saleh has also spoken to both the Maltese and British Ambassadors of late. It has been reported that Italy has invited Saleh to Rome to discuss the political roadmap he outlined three weeks ago.
On 16 May, the head of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Serraj, held a phone call with the NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg to discuss the current security and military situation in Libya. Stoltenberg is reported to have reiterated NATO support of the GNA. The two are reported to have agreed to cooperation and coordination between the Libyan military and security institutions and NATO agencies. Just a day before, Serraj, held a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan where the two discussed the developments in Libya as well as the next steps in proceeding forward from the Libya- Turkey MoU signed in November 2019. At the conclusion of the meeting Serraj is reported to have accepted an invitation by Ergodan to visit Turkey.
On 15 May, the second batch of Turkish medical supplies delivered through Tunisia’s Djerba Airport arrived in Tripoli after moving through the Tunisia-Libya Ras Jadir land border crossing. Turkey claims the supplies were made up of disinfectants, sterilizers, PPE and surgical supplies. However, Eastern Libya media have suggested the cargo was of a more suspicious nature. This sentiment was echoed by the HoR Foreign Affairs Committee, who in a statement called upon the Tunisian Foreign Minister to provide greater clarity on the delivery following “doubt” over the nature of what was being transported.
