1 – 7 April: Siyala criticises EU operation Irini

On 2 April, the Government of National Accord’s (GNA) Foreign Minister, Mohamed Taher Siyala, said in a letter to the Security Council that the European Union’s (EU) new Operation Irini to deploy naval and aerial capacities to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya ignored air borders and eastern Libyan land borders through which Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) forces have been receiving arms and military support. Siyala stressed that the EU’s plan wasn’t sufficient and wasn’t approved in consultation with the GNA.  On 1 April, the breakaway Tripoli-based House of Representatives (HoR) stressed the same sentiment.

On 1 April, the LNA claimed that a Turkish frigate fired a missile at the Watiya airbase, or in some reports a drone, while stationed off the north-western coast of Libya near Sabratha. The LNA published images online showing the projectile near Ajilat – the cause of its destruction remains unclear, with some reports indicating that it was shot down while other suggest it simply missed.
