Action – 9 February 2015

Feb 9, 2015 | ISIS

On Wednesday 4 February, approximately 40 gunmen assaulted an oilfield in Mabruk, 170 kilometres south of Sirte, damaging its infrastructure, killing ten and abducting three Filipinos and two Nigerians workers present on site. The Mabruk oil field is connected to the port of Sidra and was not operative since the month of December 2014 due to fighting in the ‘Oil Crescent’ region. The fact that gunmen were not interested in seizing the oil field itself, but rather in stealing weaponry, ammunition, vehicles and food as well as in kidnapping foreign workers makes it likely they belonged to one of the radical Islamist groups active in Libya (ISIS, Ansar al-Shari’a), further confirming the extreme perilousness of the region surrounding Sirte.
